Nikon F2.8 70-200 VRI teleconverter test images?

Does anyone have sample images taken with a 70-200 VRI with the 1.4, 1.7 and 2.0 teleconverters? Reason I'm asking is some say image quality is degraded with the 1.7 / 2.0, but I'm curious as to how degraded it is... Is it just degraded for pixel peepers who zoom into a photo x 1000, or even on a normal sized monitor you would notice the difference?

Also someone mentioned the new TC2.0 version 3 is better than the Second version, anyone tried it yet?

I have the Nikon 70-200VR F2.8 and use the Nikon TC-20E III 2x Teleconverter all of the time and think it is GREAT!!!!!!! The older 2x teleconverter wasn't very good but if you get the newer model you will be VERY HAPPY with it. If you look on my thread link below a lot of my pictures are taken with this combination.

The TC 1.4 E II & TC 1.7 E II are very good. Like grandpaw said the earlier TC 2.0 was not so good. From what I understand the TC 2.0 III is a lot better.

A friend of mine had the Nikon 1.7 and tried my 20E III and immediately sold his 1.7 to get the one like mine. I am very happy with my TC and use it just about every time I go out shooting. If you decide to get one make sure it is the 20E III and not the older II version. Remember that it will make you loose two stops of light. It will change your F2.8 to F5.6 while it is attached to your lens.

Jeff, does that combo work on both the 7000 and the 600?? I remember reading something about the TC not working with my setup (do not remember if it is my DX Lens, Body or both)

Thanks,

Pat - that combo should work well with any Nikon DSLR.

However, I tend to prefer shooting without any TC if there is no need to use a TC. You get to experience the sharpness of that lens.

Sample at f2.8

Thanks Glenn... then it was likely my DX lenses that were the culprit that I read about. Like you, I would not tend to use it if not needed.. what I had wondered was if it was practical to extend my range for wildlife. That appears not likely with my current len's.

Nice clean shot by the way!!

Pat, it will work just fine on your D7000, however it will not work on all lenses so you need to check before purchasing one. Some of the lenses it won't fit on and some of the slower lenses like a F5.6 when you loose two stops it puts the lens past the point that your Nikon's auto focus will work.

Thanks Jeff (I have a 5100, remember you have not shipped the 7000 yet!!) :)

Thats what I was remembering.. so it is the lens compatibility rather than the camera! Thanks to you and Glenn both for the reponses.

BTW, scanned through your D7000 Tips!! Very Impressive effort and I ever get a 7000 I expect I will be re-visiting it in detail...

You can use any Nikon mount F lens if you buy a Kenko TC 1.4x. Even my old Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro lens worked with it.

The image was shot using a D7000 with the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VRII at 195mm, f2.8, 1/800, ISO 640. The combo works very well. If you want a longer reach lens, your 55-300mm is probably it unless you want something much sharper, then the 300mm f4 with a 1.4x TC is the key for longer reach.

Pat- I've used the TC 1.4 & TC I.7 70-200 f2.8 VR I combination on my D5100. It worked well. The only caveot being that lens & converter don't balance well on the D5100. I found using a monpod helped me.

Glenn & Chuck, Thank you both for the additional info... I will not be picking up a long zoom anytime soon.. My only option today may be the Kenko but I am sure of cost vs gain... I will look into it. My next actual lens purchase is likly to be an ultra wide (10/12 range) as I belive I will use that more than longer than 300..

Thanks again all... and I return this unintended Hijack back to Ted and his wonderful test images!:p
