Pricing Photos

Have been asked by a father of a son who's hockey game I shot for a cost to get copies of the photos I took. I am just wondering where to start with this, and am asking feedback from people who have done this type of work before.

All photos are action shots during game.

Be careful or you will lose your amateur status :encouragement:

Is this something you would like to get into on a regular basis, or is this a one off situation? if you hope to sell more, I would sell them for enough to cover all your expenses (printing costs, ticket costs, gas, etc.) and make a small profit with the hopes other would see the photos and want more from you. As you gain more fame, you can up the price. If you see this as a one-off, then I would sell at a bit higher price so you can finance some more gear.

I would like to continue in the hopes to fund new gear, justify some expenses related to "hobby". He has agreed to share the photos of his son with fellow parents as I shot the whole hockey game, but was approached before game started to ask if I got any good photos of #4 he would be interested in some.

So I sent the photos this morning and have now been asked for copies, not sure if he just wants non copyrighted photos or actual prints, so may need to find out more. As far as expenses, arena is 2 min drive away, I didn't pay and did editing while watching tv with fiancé :)

My first mistake was the files are large enough he could have just cut my copyright out and still had high res prints. Lots to learn :/

When I am on a shoot, and I have some shots that I just happened to pick up in the course of shooting my paid for shoot, assuming I'm not really having to do any work with them, I charge $7 for a 5x7 and $10 (my cost about $2) for an 8x10. I do not sell digital, however, I will send a courtesy web resolution for social media with each purchase and ask that my name is attached. These cheap photos for what I just happened to shoot are bonus money on the shoot and gets the word out there. It leads other potential clients back to me. NEVER let anything less than good sellable quality work go out.

I price mine out to cover expenses plus time. I charge $15-25 for 8x10 if printing photos. My best seller has been to sell the digital prints for a flat rate of $12 a photo, 2 for $20, or 3 for $25. I tell my clients that they can make as many copies or prints as they would like. But all copyrights are mine and if used for commercial purpose, they must contact me. Best and cheapest way I have found to do it.
