Day 2: Sunrise with the Green Monster

I found this smoothie recipe online a few days ago and felt compelled to try it. It has spinach among other "healthy" add-ins. The first few sips were kind of interesting, but I'm growing a liking to it!

This was the view outside our backyard after I made the smoothie and thought it was a good photo-op.

Day 3: I couldn't decide! So I have 3 for you all to enjoy today. 2 of our yellow lab, Truman. And one of our trees out in the front yard.

I had just come home from running errands and Truman was eagerly waiting to play for a bit out in the snow. Both pictures I was lucky to get him at the right moment. He's only a year and a half so he's very energetic and doesn't sit still for too long (good practice for me as a soon-to-be mom!)

enjoy! 20130103-DSC_0090.jpg20130103-DSC_0094.jpg20130103-DSC_0097.jpg

Thanks Pat! He was still semi-in-motion on the first one, I literally yelled his name and clicked it as soon as he looked up :)

Day 4: Winter Sunrise.

I shot this in manual mode. I've long been afraid of experimenting with this setting but I picked up Bryan Peterson's book, Understanding Exposure, yesterday and have started to read it. He convinced/inspired me that I can do this! So since last night and this morning I've just been experimenting with the controls and setting and feel like I'm getting a better understanding of how I'm shooting and why I'm getting the results. This has seriously changed my (photography) life!

Used my 55-300mm for the shot, as I'll likely be using this lens a lot when my husband and I go to Hawaii.

Camera Maker: NIKON CORPORATION
Camera Model: NIKON D5100
Lens: 55.0-300.0 mm f/4.5-5.6
Image Date: 2013-01-04
Focal Length: 240mm (35mm equivalent: 360mm)
Aperture: f/5.3
Exposure Time: 0.0004 s (1/2500)
ISO equiv: 200
Exposure Bias: -2.67 EV
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual

Using manual mode can be quite freeing. It gives you complete control. It also helps you to learn more about exposure and the relationships among light/aperture/shutter speed/ISO. The best way is to just play around and take all sorts of photos with different settings. After a while, you will be able to predict the exposure settings quite accurately. It is so much easier today than when I started, using film. With digital, you can check your results immediately. I think that helps.

Once you understand exposure settings, you will find that you have more confidence in trying different exposures and will not feel tied to full program mode for your photos.

Day 5, I can't decide between these three so you get the pleasure of all of them!

These were all shot in my kitchen. I was looking out my backyard for awhile and wasn't happy with many of the shots I took, all seemed pretty dull. So I sat down on my kitchen floor and was taking a few shots of Truman (our dog), after he left the room I started looking around on the ground and shot the photo of our cooking magazines. I want to do more cooking this year (as I'll be a stay-at-home mom soon!), so I figure I should probably start cracking open these magazines. Then I looked up and saw the sun beaming through this empty water bottle and just loved how the light came through the bottle.

Alrighty, still here on Day 6! First one is me with some afternoon tea (it's cold here in Iowa!) and I'm about to crack open a new book called "Organize Now!" My hopes is to get our life better organized this year in and around the house...we'll see how that pans out! At least it'll give me something to aspire towards...

Second, is me sitting on our steps and Truman came by to see what the fuss was about. I liked how it framed him. He looks like he's in doggie jail :)

Third is of our brick on the house. I was outside letting Truman out and standing in the entry way for this shot, I love the texture.

There's something peaceful about the morning sunrise for me. It's becoming my favorite time to shoot!

Here's a few from this morning that I really like:
