DT's 365/Daily pics

Hi all

I've been planning for a while to start a 365 project for 2013. Whilst I can't see myself having anywhere near enough time to take a photo each day, I'm gonna give it a red hot go!

I thought I might put up some of my recent work while I wait for the actual 365 project to start. A group of us at work participated in Movember this year. I setup a photo shoot at the end for most of the guys. Here are a couple of the shots I took.

I know these are super cheesy but this was the look we were going for.

I'm open to any thoughts/critisisms. I'm here to learn and evolve as a photographer so any suggestions are most welcome.

I like the shots DT. B/W makes them look almost vintage. As far as the 365 goes, why wait. Start now and get in the habit of going out and shooting. Save the small items inside for those days when it's too bad outside to go out shooting.

I'd like to think I could have completed one last year if illness hadn't sidelined me for all those days.

You might consider doing a 52 weekly shots instead of the 365 daily thread. This will allow you more time to concentrate on quality instead of just shooting something to be able to post a picture.

Thanks grandpaw. I think you're right. Quality over quantity. Did a beach night shoot last night so will have something to put up this week.

Thanks Mike.

I've taken your advice and started yesterday. I'm away from my pc for the next week so I'll load some when I return.

Here is a shot from last night. My family and I are staying in Phillip Island, Vic (that's in Australia). We're probably going to be here for a couple weeks so I took the opportunity to post an unedited version of probably the best shot. I will know if it is once I get in front of a PC with Photoshop.

Really nice Dave. Enjoy your stay there and show us the surrounding landscape. It seems like a really nice place to spend some quality time.

Very nice photo!! I am curious about the 12min exposure, was it actually that long?

Yes. I played around with some high ISO shots first which were shorter but I was curious to compare results over several ISO's. So I used a technique I learnt a while back of double the time for every halfing of exposure.

Times were as follows:

ISO. Exposure time
3200. 45 sec
1600. 1.5 min
800. 3 min
400. 6 min
200. 12 min

My Sigma 70-200 f2.8 just packed up! Only other lens with me is the 10-24. Looks like I'm taking landscapes for the rest of my trip!

OK. I'm back in front of a PC with about 1000+ photos to sift through. I thought i'd put up a couple from the last week just for completeness. I will be starting a new thread for my 2013 365 in the next day or two.

All of these were taken with the D800.

Some more night photography down at Cowes beach, Phillip Island. Tide was quite high and I found myself with wet feet by the end of the shoot.
I had some problems with a camera lens on Christmas and I had reset the D800 back to defaults in an attempt to eliminate potential causes. I forgot that the default setup is to shoot JPEG instead of RAW so I was quite disappointed when I got back and realised what I had done. Not overly disappointed though now that i'm back at my PC and can see the end result.

Back at the same spot again. Hoping to get a better result by taking a RAW image. This time it was low tide and I was able to get a different angle on the beach. There were a group of people with a bonfire burning on the beach which was handy for something to auto focus on.

Further up the beach I came across this rock formation. The camera battery died mid exposure; about 3 mins earlier than I had anticipated. Because I shot RAW though, I was able to get the extra exposure needed out of the file.
