N55 help

I have been looking to buy a dslr lately, the capabilities of the equipment are great. However until I can afford it I am using a N55 I got almost 6 years ago. I hardly used it then and didn't know what I was doing with it. But until I can afford an upgrade can any of you suggest a lens upgrade from the 20-80mm? It's just not strong enough of a lens to me. Any help would be appreciated.

Why not get a 50 1.8? It's the best bargain around and one of the sharpest too. Remember that you pay a lot for a zoom and VR. A standard lens doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but it's sharp and cheap.
