What kind of lighting do you think is used for portraits like this?

For example:

matmoon on deviantART

Shutter Speed:1/160 second
Aperture:F/2.8
Focal Length:85 mm
ISO Speed:800

matmoon's deviantART gallery

Shutter Speed:1/200 second
Aperture:F/3.2
Focal Length:85 mm
ISO Speed:400

Can't figure out if flash is even used, must be diffused? And what lens considering the focal length, something out of these 3 maybe: 18-200mm, 18-105mm, 70-300mm?

And yes, I'm a n00b, eager to learn. :D

It's called soft light. A large surface of light that evenly bathes the subject. It can be obtained from a large window exposed to the north (can't have the sunlight coming straight in), or a large softbox with a powerfull electronic flash.

It also takes a good lens and exposure technique to get it right.

Those images are lit with natural light. Strong backlighting and large white reflectors are used to return soft light to the subject. The lack of directionality and specular highlights gives that flat, soft look.
