when shooting sun rises and sets do I need filters, can I shoot with flash or not, can I use auto setting. Any thing you can throw my way would be helpful.

Raven,

I have not used any filters with mine and do NOT use flash for them... I havde done both auto and manual modes.. Depending on what camera, try the auto mode for night scenic then look at the settings it picks, then adjust manually according to how you like the picture... Just experiment!

There are some great sunrise/sunset shooters here and I am sure they can provide some good tips. I am fairly new...

You really have to experiment. I use a polarizing filter sometimes but not often. As for the flash. If you are taking a shot of a person with a sunset as a backdrop, the camera will probably expose for the sunset and leave the person as a silhouette. The flash will fill in details of the person. Again, experiment and find what is best for you.
