BRRR! Shooting In the Snow

So a friend of mine who is impressed by my photos asked if i would do some shots of her and her pet up in the mountains playing in some snow. I own a Nikon 18-55 and 75-200 kit lens. I have rented other lenses before and found that they make a huge difference in shooting.
This is going to be my Christmas gift for my friend so i want to rent a pro lens for the occasion. I have some ideas but wanted to get some feedback.

I have a D5100 by the way :)

It sounds like you want to capture the surroundings along with some action and People/pets. You need a good range, speed, bokeh and something wide enough to capture some background. I'd say the Dx 17-55 2.8, the Fx 24-70 2.8 would be nice also, but might not give you enough width considering the crop factor. Practice with the 18-55, depending on how that range feels, rent one of the 2.8's. BTW, The 18-55 is a great little lens in it's own right, but not "pro".
