V1 or even J1 live video monitoring HDMI ???

I am looking at getting a V1 and would use it for both photography and video. I would like to know if the HDMI out can be used for live monitoring. If it can what kind of quality does it have? I have searched the web and have not found out for sure. Several sources indicate it but no definitive answer.
I understand that it will only record 20 minutes of video. Does it stop completely or start a new file after the 20 minutes? I have used cameras that do both.

Could you explain what you mean with 'Live monitoring?'

The J1 takes 17mins on HD, perhaps if the quality is decreased longer video times?

Live monitoring - watch video through the HDMI while the camera is recording. Some cameras have HDMI but only allow playback of the video after the fact. I need the ability to monitor before and during recording. Usually a camera at this price level won't but I have read several articles that suggest the V1 can and perhaps the J1 also.
