D5100 Auto Flash

Hello, I am new to photography so any help would be appreciated.

I recently bought a D5100 and have been playing about with the camera mainly on auto. I have noticed that in anything other than bright light the flash flips open and fires up when taking the picture.

I know the flash can be switched off but should the flash activate in these circumstances and if not can anything be adjusted.

Any help would be appreiated.

Yes and yes. The flash will go off in Auto a lot of the times. If you want to stay in Auto, go to Auto with no flash - it is the next click on your dial going clockwise. Past that, i would start playing around in P mode or A mode; in which case, you can turn off the flash.
