I was out with my wife this morning for a walk and came across this fellow!

This was shot with my:

D800
ISO 400 (forgot to lower it to 200) DOH!
f8
1/1250s
300mm + 1.4TC

Hand Held

Nice shots Art, although the Dof seems shallow for f8. I think he's staring at your D800 trying to figure out how to fly off with it :)

Thanks for the king words!

I went back and checked my data and the DoF is correct. I put the wrong shutter speed down, it is 1/1250s. Sorry about that.

I typically find DoF to be shallow most of the time, not just with f8. I had room here to fiddle with shutter speed to increase my f stop, but was too excited to shoot the bird that I forgot. I do this often! :)

I've always wanted that lens and TC combo. Nice shots Art.

Thanks, Glenn. In my discussion with NIkon, the best combo is the 300mm f2.8 and the TC1.4. Big money. For my budget, the f4 combo works just fine.

The best value purchase is picking up a 300 F4 ED-IF. I believe this lens produces a slightly better image than the new ED-AF-S. I opted to upgrade hoping for faster autofocus as well, but by and large, the two lenses are almost the same in every aspect, thereby making the older lens a bargain!

They do not come up for sale that often, but in my opinion, a great deal.
