I upgraded from a Panasonic DMC-GF3 to the D5100, I'm very disappointed at the stock 18-55mm lens on the D5100.I compared pictures taken with the GF3 on Auto vs the D5100 on Auto, and then both on Manual mode using the same settings and the GF3 had better resolution, sharpness and color been only 12.1mp.

I decided to buy the Nikon 50mm AF f/1.8D lens because of the reviews and I'm missing auto focus but I'm getting great images now.

Now I'm in the search for a good lens with auto focus something similar to the stock 18-55mm lens.

At first I bought the Nikon J1 and the Panasonic GF3 and the GF3 won on picture quality and manual controls, the Nikon J1 Won on VIDEO. 1080p@60fps on the nikon J1 is way better than the one on the D5100 or GF3 but image quality is decent not perfect.

Here is a sample of the 2 cameras:

1) Panasonic DMC-GF3 with 14-42mm (set to 50mm+/- equivalent) ISO 200 because it doesn't have 250 that's why is a little bit darker (sharper than D5100 #2 Picture)
2) D5100 with 18-55mm stock lens (set to 50mm+/- equivalent)
3) D5100 with 50mm AF f/1.8D lens (fixed to 50mm) BEST PICTURE

Now my question is what lens should I buy? cheap on price not quality

Two observations. Firstly, did you use a tripod for both cameras? Secondly, as the sensors are a different size does F5.6 give the same DOF on both cameras? I suspect not and a fair comparison might be at F8 on the Nikon.

Regarding lenses, perhaps you should have got the 35mm 1.8 DX as it's probably more use for general shooting and would autofocus.
