Does flash photography harm artwork?

It might have been more of a problem back in the day of flash bulbs. Also, the flashes are distracting to the museum ambiance. I have never had a need for flash in a museum due to the excellent lighting.

I think this was more out of concern of UV light from the flash affecting delicate artwork. Hundreds of flashes a day would add up to something potentially damaging. I don't know if flashes today (or ever) have any UV output.
Nowadays must just be a "for the comfort of others" thing.
