Photographing the Sun

I have just purchased a Nikon D5100. I have 2 lenses: Nikor 18-55mm and a Nikor 55-300mm. My question is, what are the rules on taking a photo with the sun shining directly into the lens? I certainly don't want to damage the image sensor.

There are filters available for shooting the sun directly. Filtered non-direct sunlight or sunsets will not damage the sensor. I'd be more worried about damage to the eye.

As an amateur astronomer, I strongly advise you to use solar glass filters rated at 99.999% white light blocking. Please be super-careful when imaging the sun; it's too easy to slip up and damage your eyesight. I'd also suggest contacting a local astronomy club for advice on solar imaging.

I like using Liveview when photographing the Sun, that way you are not looking directly into the sun, I do not believe the TV has enough energy that can harm the human eye, even at full itensity output.
