I can certainly understand the rationale behind this, but vacations are already expensive I have done the arm stretch thing and it really never works out that good. I have asked other people to take pictures of us, but i never hand over my camera... i hand over the wife's p&s, lol. I guess if you were even more brave, you can set up your cam on a tripod and hope that no one runs away with it, lol. Next time i am in the Philippines, no need to hire a photog because there are plenty of aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. to take the picture for me, lol.
