You are possibly right we shall see. To my mind it was better the way it was.I'm hoping jdeg made the change to speed up the loading of pages.

I think it's a program change. This way your picture isn't crowding the side bar menu.
The change was originally to correct an issue with images running into the sidebar on smaller screens, but yes, it also results in faster load times for users. Currently, attached images will be 300px wide, but images added via an img tag will be 600px.
