The Nikon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 VRII can almost be considered as a f4 if you average it. It should be a nice light weight companion to any FX camera. I'm a little worried since the older version can pump in and out dust to the sensor unlike the IF version.

personally, I am happy to stick with my 24-120 F4 it is a superb lens and well worth the extra cost for fixed aperture across whole range, super sharp wide open and IS that equates to about 3 stops.

I am so happy with the IQ from this lens that it has now become my prime and relegated both the 24mm f2.8 & 50mm f1.4 to the cupboard and I never thought it would do that as I have always been a prime lens person.

How times and performance changes!

I agree that the Nikon 24-120mm f4 VRII is a great lens especially for FX since I use to own one. However, the new optical design that the 24-85mm f3.5 4.5 VRII brings lower price, lighter and a great compromise.
