I know that that the number of remaining shots is shown both before and after a shot is taken, but for a brief moment another figure shows up in the same spot (lower right corner of the monitor), for example "r17"...what is that?

I believe this is the number of shots remaining before the camera's buffer fills up. The buffer is what the camera uses to store the data temporarily while it is written to the memory card. It should show when you press the shutter button half way.

Obir is correct.
The approximate number of images that can be stored in the memory buffer at current settings is shown in the viewfinder
exposure-count display while the shutter-release button is pressed. The illustration below shows the display when space remains in the buffer for about 27 pictures.
