Monochrome in camera and White balance setting?

Does one need to worry about white balance, when taking a Black & White photo in camera?
From all of the books that I have read, there seem to be no mention on white balance. Have read
a couple of Ansel Adams books and there is no mention of it in them either. Did they not need to worry about it
when using a Large Format Camera, or a View Camera? Or was it dealt with, when they where processing
the film?

But in these days they were using filters (yellow, red, orange, blue, green) to change the density of differents parts of their picture and this before processing. Experience counted for something. This is something that's easily done while post processing with CS5 at least. When you use the B & W filter, one can play with all these filters to change the B & W image.

In short.... No
White balance is about colour temprature and correcting the colour.
Since there is no colour in black and white it need not be of any real concern.
Photographers often use coloured filters on there lenses. Green filter can give nice skin tones,
Orange and red filters can give you dramtic skys in landscape etc.
A deep red filter used on black and white for example will make deep blue sky go almost black
so that white clouds stand out etc. This effect can be implicated in PS these days, but if your shooting
black and white jpgs in camera its still something you can try and you would most likely love the results.
