What are the different varieties of tripod stands? I have a D40 camera and a D5000 camera. Do i have to buy different tripod stands for both the cameras?

Different varieties include aluminum or carbon fiber. Mostly look for stability and weight handling (camera & lens). Cheap tripods are not worth the bother, they just don't offer the stability of the more expensive ones and stability is what you want a tripod for to begin with. The same tripod should be fine for both camera bodies.

Yup, you should really only need one tripod. When considering your budget, don't forget that you also have to buy the head. As Bill mentioned, there are two basic material varieties: aluminum and carbon fiber. There is a substantial price difference, but (personal opinion here) I think you only need carbon fiber if you're doing a lot of hiking where the weight reduction really becomes an issue.

Induro is the brand I use. They're nice without being terribly expensive.
