The ring will dictate whether she'll let you buy something desireable for you or not... If you want more control of your life, it is ideal to go without the ring. So, get rid of the precious! (LOL!)
On a serious note, if you are using a MF Ai lens as an example, you can manually adjust the aperture. For D series lenses, keep it locked at f22.
