Auto Focus Problems

This is a bit vague to debug. If you got the camera from a store, I'd suggest go back to the store "WITH" the camera in hand and have someone competent check it out for you and explain what was wrong.

Thanks for your response. I called Nikon and they walked me through the problem. I changed a setting and was told the 5100 does not have a separate engine to change the focus.

That is correct. You need to use AF-S lenses, otherwise you'll be focusing manually with anything else, such as an AF lens. AF-S lenses have their own built in focus motors.
