Eagle Lake (El Dorado National Forest, CA USA)

The roughly 1 mile hike up some fairly steep hills was one of the best hikes I have ever done. You gain several hundred feet in elevation to end up at 7000 feet elevation. This puts you in the midst of a beautiful forest, surrounded by huge mountains.

The journey was just as amazing as the destination. The hike is not one along a marked trail or path, or complete with handrails and signs. In stead you hike using someone elses foot steps as a guide through the forest, eventually finding yourself climbing rocks.

3/4 of the way up you will emerge from the trees to find yourself standing on top of thousands of pounds of solid rock. Your trail, which was once dirt and twigs, is now rock, as you walk along a giant rock face over looking a valley and the lakes below.

The lake is large, with less than 10 people at it when I visited it, giving you a feel of seclusion and accomplishment for your efforts.
