Vermonster was the winner of the "Shadow" Weekly Challenge and has issued the following:

Your challenge for the Week of July 27 - Aug 3 is Railroad Tracks:

The railroad has been substantially downsized over the last few years. In the U.S., many States have turned abandoned railroad tracks into bike paths and nature trails. The photo provided as this week's example was taken on an abandoned section of railroad tracks in northern New England. I will be looking for that artistic twist and/or wow effect when selecting a winner for this challenge.

I encourage all those photographers that are new to Nikonites to jump in and get your feet wet on this week's challenge regardless of your level of experience. It can be fun and very rewarding. If you are unsure how to post your photos, go to the FAQ section for help or just simply ask in one of the threads.

PLEASE DO NOT take photos that could endanger you or others on this challenge!
Be sure to visit the Weekly Challenge Rules & Guidelines for more information. This thread will be closed on Aug 3 (midnight EDT)...so get those photos in!

The Rules

1. Photos must be posted to the thread in order to be considered for the challenge.
2. Any photo submitted for a weekly challenge must be taken during the dates specified in the challenge thread and taken by you! Because not all EXIF data can be verified, we will use the honor system here.
3. Challenges will be judged solely by the winner of the previous week. There will be no individual voting.
4. Only one photo entry per member, for each challenge.

There will be no cash or prizes awarded for the Weekly Challenge, unless specifically noted by the site administrator. This is a member-run contest, and the purpose of the Weekly Challenge is to encourage member participation on the forums and to keep you taking pictures!

Any photo will be accepted for the challenge. Edited/straight out of the camera, it does not matter. You are left with complete freedom to do whatever genre of photography you wish to do, and your own interpretation of the challenge subject.

"Railfanning" is where I got my humble beginnings in photography. There are legions of train enthusiasts dedicated to photographing trains, rails, and trackside structures.

Please use extreme caution near railroad tracks. Always wear bright clothing, and always let a friend or loved one know where you are going. It is very unlikely that you would be hit by a train. It's far more likely to twist an ankle or fall down.

Contrary to popular belief, railroads are not public property. The right of way (tracks, roadbed/gravel, and up to 20 feet in each direction of the tracks) are all privately owned property of the railroad. You can be prosecuted and arrested for trespassing.

Do not even attempt to set foot in a railroad yard without permission. Again, this is private property and most companies have been skittish about telephoto lenses since 9/11. Go to the yard office and speak to the yardmaster directly. Odds are, they will ask you to leave. However, some may provide an escort for you. Railroads are all union operated, and generally speaking, non-union personnel are not allowed there.

I highly recommend carrying these with you:

If you have any other questions, I will be glad to help. I'm sure Rick (AxeMan) will also be happy to assist you, as he has a lot of experience with trains too.

Anthony, You beat me to it, couldn't have said it any better. If anyone has any questions or needs help setting up a shot you can Private Message me. Be more than happy to help.

These people have no sense of humor, and playing dumb is NOT going to get you out of anything. There are many public places you can safely photograph railroads from, but even then please be safe. You have been warned.

Ok this is my first attempt at entering the competiton. This is the old railway bridge at Ruswarp near Whitby. Now used by the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, and it runs quite regulary.
Any way here goes :D

I had to go 30 miles to get this shot! Hope you appreciate all the effort I put into this! ;)

What effort? Did you WALK? SKYDIVE? LOW CRAWL?

Hell NO! You drove! Now I realize that for an old dude like yourself, 30 miles is a lot like the effort required to get over the Donner Pass, but still.

You just had to make sure that your prune juice was finished! :)

(Nice shot Dude!)
