Hi to all,

I have Nikon D5500 with kit lense 18-55/3.5-5.6 VRII and want to add a fixed one. What I can afford is both 50/1.8 + 35/1.8 or only 50/1.4.

Please advice me which is the better way to go?

Many thanks in advance for your kind cooperation, Ivan

If it were me, I would get the nikkor 50mm f1.8 and the nikkor 35mm f1.8! They are both very good lenses both af-d and af-s lenses! I have both af-d 50mm f1.8 and 35mm f1.8 and I am very happy with both! :)

Thanks for the prompt responses. Do you think 1.8 will give good DOF with APS-C sensor? Is 35mm good for street photography? What are the benefits to get f/1.4 against f/1.8?

Regards, Ivan

Only benefit I can think of is it will make your wallet lighter. Seriously the 1.8 version of the 50mm is arguably better than the 1.4 and the 35mm would see little difference either

I have no experience with those thing, so on 26.Sept I will have both 50 and 35. Thanks. And yes, I will share the test results:D

I only have the 35mm 1.8 and it has excellent DOF. As for street photography , you should be fine with it.

Good luck with your decision.

Unless you love the shallow DOF of F1.4, F1.8 lenses are sharper.

I have the 35mm F1.8 DX and 50mm F1.8D, both are excellent lenses, as long as you want to shoot at wider aperture or in low light. In bright light I prefer the Kit 18-55 as that gives me zoom flexibility. For most of day light scenes I shoot at higher F stops F8 to F11, so the kit lens is perfect.

For indoor I use the 35mm extensively. 50mm on a DX sensor is a bit long, and I would prefer an 85mm F1.8G to 50mm F1.8G. For street shots in good light it is the kit lens. For getting the DOF you will any way shoot at higher F stops. If you want to isolate your subject, then F1.8 is needed.

the 50mm 1.4 has generally worse image quality than the 50mm 1.8g so unless you really need the extra wide 1.4 aperture go with the 1.8 and whatever else you can afford in another focal length like the 35

I used the 35mm f1.8 on my D3100 for years instead of the kit lens.

That being said, I'd sell the kit lens in favor of the Sigma 17-50 f2.8
