Hi there

New to the 810.. Coming up from a 7100, and am wondering if with the 810 in commander mode fires the visible (not in the exposure) flash to trigger others remotely or it doesn't actually fire a flash at all.

Thanks!

D810 and D7100 Commanders work the same.

On both, the internal flash has to fire, to program and trigger the remote, but it is your choice if it contributes to the exposure or not.
The Commander menu can program the Built In flash (group) to be Off, via setting its mode to be "- -".
It still flashes commands before the shutter opens, but then will not contribute if off. Or it has the choice of contributing fully.

See Using the Nikon CLS Remote Wireless Flash System about this commander mode.

Ah okay thanks guys.. The only way around having to use the flash to trigger is getting a pocket wizard setup or similar right?

Appreciate the quick replies!

Yes.

Flash trigger possibilities include:

1. PC sync cord
2. Optical slaves
3. Radio triggers
4. Nikon Commander system (optical)

All except Commander are manual flash systems. But have to mention that there are a few TTL radio possibilities, generally expensive and make shift.
