1st backdrop color?

So about to search for and get my first proper backdrop cloth, any suggestions on a good starting color?

White would be easy to wash out and get a pure white surrounding look.

Black might do wonders for isolation as well, though would have to do much harder flash work at lower apertures.

Is gray a decent in-between? Any other suggestions?

Also, what's the better material for portability and longevity - cotton, muslin, canvas?

What subjects do you plan to shoot?

My late wife was a pro portrait/wedding photographer in film days her first choice was gray

Plan to shoot models, so I suppose a nice gray should do the trick then.

I love grey backgrounds, I think I can do the most with that color, depending on how the light are placed. Can't wait to see your images
