What lens should I use with extension tubes?

I just got the kenkos to use with my D3100. I thought I read that they should be used with something around 70mm, but I'm having trouble finding info about it. I have the kit lens, 35 1.8, 55-300 3.5-5.6, and tokina 11-16. Thanks.

I'm mostly interested in using all 3 at once for the max effect. I just tried it with the 35 and the object pretty much needed to touch the glass. Didn't seem to work. I tried it out yesterday with my telephoto, and it seemed to work ok, but seemed a bit silly/dangerous to use with such a big lens. This one was at 85mm

Try your longest lens. It isn't a fast lens to begin with, and you will lose light by attaching the teleconverter(s) making it more difficult to focus. If you take a look at Matt Granger's video, he compares a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 with a 50mm f/1.4. You will definitely be further away with your longer lens. A true macro lens is one specifically made for macro work--105mm macro is more popular than a 40mm--so longer lenses are good to use.
