Aperture priority and blinking

OK, I give up...it's late and tired of reading manual and D810 book. Here's my question. In A priority while metering a dark subject, 24-70 wide open to f2.8 , the Shutter speed and exposure scale in the viewfinder blink. What exactly is this telling me? Is it that the scene is too dim to meter correctly?

Thanks,
Rich

That's basically it Rich - My D7100 does the same. You will have a minimum shutter speed set when in A mode, and a maximum ISO - If the minimum shutter speed and maximum ISO can't expose the scene properly, the display will flash. The same happens in manual mode when auto-iso can't go high enough to expose properly with your given shutter & aperture.
