Pardon me for being thick but when I change from AUTO which one is the daylight setting?

Incandescent? Cool white? Direct Sunlight? Cloudy? Shade?

I would hazard a guess at Incandescent????

No, Daylight WB is for direct sunlight. There is also Cloudy WB for cloudy (indirect sun) and Shade WB for shade.
These are ballpark, normally close, but exact situations can vary slightly. But these are generally fooled less than Auto WB.

Incandescent is the old style tungsten light bulbs indoors, and incandescent light is quite orange. If you used Incandescent WB in sunshine (daylight), the picture would come out quite blue, because daylight was not orange to be corrected (but was "corrected" anyway).

You should do this simple test one time, incorrectly use Incandescent WB in sunshine (daylight), to see the blue, to better understand the basic concept of white balance.
