I have NEVER seen a pine cone like this in my entire life.

It was not the size, but the misshapen growth that bothers me. This is a prime indication of air pollution having a negative effect on the local foliage.

Trust me, here in North Carolina, we know pine trees. THIS is a mutated tree. This is a bad thing.

I've never seen anything like that either, Pete. And we know our pine trees out here, too! You're probably right.........it's mutated. I would take that off the tree and perhaps preserve it, maybe even show it to the local botanical society to get their reaction and opinion.

Could it be caused by some kind of insect or parasite? I don't know your native species well but I have never seen anthing like that in the pines around here :(
