When im out shooting at my local rugby club I use my 55-300 on sports mode. When I shoot in the day what settings can you recommend or would I not be able to shoot other than in sports mode. As iv noticed sometimes the auto focus picks out the tree etc behind rather than the players in front. I sometimes shoot manual when the players are on stop. Below is a link of what I took yesterday. Advice much appreciated

When shooting sports I always choose single point and continuous mode. I choose where the focus point is and it takes a bit of getting used to to keep it on the subject.

Trial and error will help with the settings
Try ISO400-800 ( if need be go higher)
SS 1/500-1/600

Use AF-C with single point focus as said by Fastglass

Also u can try shooting in burst..check out back button focusing

Check out the Exif of your images..you will get an idea what settings to start with

Manual mode w/ Auto ISO. This way I control the shot and let the camera do the rest. Shutter speed set to either freeze the action or to allow for movement to be visible while panning.

Thanks for the help guys. Plenty of things to try out. I think its just a case of what my camera can do and how to apply them to the shot ;)
