You're referring to the 17-50mm f/2.8 right? I can't speak from experience, but I don't see why it wouldn't be a good lens for landscape unless you want to go wider like the 10-24mm, or Nikon 10-24mm (I have one) but with those you'd be losing a couple stops.

Is the 17-50mm sigma good for landscapes and portraits as well ?

I have seen portrait photographers take awesome photographs with the 17-50mm at the long end only. Therefore I would say yes although I do not consider myself a portrait photographer.
