Night time photography

Hello all, im trying to take night time photos on manual on 30" and F 4.5 in upstate New York. Its very dark in a family back yard however it will not take the picture. I am new to these type of photos and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think you need your camera and lens in manual and lens set at infinity....Give it a google and I'm sure you'll get sound advice...

Yes, you will need to focus manually. If it is too dark, the camera won't autofocus and won't fire. Put the lens in manual and it should work. If it is distant scenery, focus on infinity. If it is nearby, you might need to use a light to focus or just experiment/guess on the manual focus.

If it's feasible, try illuminating your subject with a flashlight just long enough for auto-focus to get a focus-lock. Once focus is set, hit the shutter.
