Even from a distance, the Nikon 80-400VR was able to pick up the heated air from the welder.

Well, 4AM rolls around a little too quickly for my liking. My niece and I arrived at the best viewing site at 5AM. With my lack of low-light photography experience, the photos are simply snapshots of a relatively historical event. Here they are in a pretty accurate chronological order.

Arrival 5AM. Got the last parking spot within walking distance (3 blocks).

This is my last panorama of the Interbelt Bridge before it was leveled.

There was a kind of a party atmosphere, though filled with anticipation of not knowing what to expect.

The plan was to implode the bridge at "dusk". I learned that "dusk" is not necessarily "sunrise". Today, dusk was 6AM.

Great photos Ted - they turned out great!

In a different light in the late 1970s when America's mighty steel industry began to fade, dozens of enormous mills were demolished, along with the futures of thousands of millworkers. People lined up along fencelines with glee awaiting the blasts that brought works down.

Somewhere in my memory is poignant mention of a lone millworker at such an event with tears in his eyes. Where others saw entertainment, he saw the sad reality of the event.
