Saint-Louis-Arzviller Inclined Plane, Marne-Rhine Canal, France.

This boat lift was built to replace 17 locks. The previous day-long passage can now be accomplished in 20 minutes. It takes 1 38-metre barge or 2/3 pleasure craft.

Last summer, the caisson suddenly moved as a tourist boat was entering, cutting into the hull and allowing thousands of gallons of water to pour into the valley below. Camping sites and part of a nearby town had to be evacuated.

It reopened last month after 10 months repair.
