DX Crop Mode on D610?

Hello All,

I'm going to be ordering a D610 in the near future (happy day). If I use some of my DX lenses, does that mean the D610 will become a 10 or so MP camera?

How is the picture quality using a DX lens? Any examples?

Thank you.

It's a 10MP DX camera. Picture quality depends entirely on the lens. Good lens, good pictures. Here are some pics I took with my D600 (same sensor) and a Rokinon 8mm DX Fisheye. You can't blow them up very big, but for the 'net they're fine.

I realize that the D610 produces a 10 mp image in DX mode, it doesn't really add up mathematically, does it? I would have expected it to be somwhere around 18 mp. I wonder why it's so much less..?

You should already have an idea on how the images will look based on the type of lenses that you currently use.

It is best to sell your DX and get FX compatible lenses before you move to D610.

Because the mathematics of a "1.5X sensor" imply the X-factor in magnification, but not in surface area.

An FX sensor is 36mm x 24mm, for a total of 864 sq. mm of surface area.

A DX sensor is 23.7mm x 15.7mm, for a total of 372.1 sq mm of surface area.

The ratio of sensor surface area is 372.1/864 or about .43. So a DX sensor is 43% as large as an FX. So, when you're talking MP's (or anything else regarding Nikon DX vs. FX in terms of sensor area) simply multiply the FX number by 0.43 to get the equivalent in a DX crop. For the D600, that's 24 * .43, or 10.32 MP's.

It might just be time to put the camera down and do a little remodeling this weekend :). Nice examples!

think of it like a pizza, a 12" pizza is enough for one person, but a 18" feeds a whole family with leftovers. thats a crop ratio of 1.5, which is the same as crop ratio of DX to FX. granted this isn't perfect math because we're talking about squares instead of circles, but the same basic idea applies. You have to think of it in terms of full perimeter, instead of height and width. Or like you were painting a wall, and you decided you wanted to add a trim color. Your thinking "Gee, I only need inches around the borders, that shouldn't take much paint... but then you realize that two inces of paint going around the whole room is a lot more than it sounds.

after writing this, it makes me question if I should have gotten my degree in photography or mathematics education. I live a sad life lol

Just an opinion. With a fx sensor, won't it makes sense to use the full sensor by going for fx lens? When I mount my tokina 11-16 f2.8 on my D610, I can see an inner rectengle in my view finder. I suppose if capture only the smaller area.
