Archiving Negatives

Anyone know of any way to archive negatives into an electronic format which could then be viewed on a computer (as a positive image)? I know I could scan photos in, but is there a process to deal with large quantities of negatives?

My dad was an avid photographer for over 60 years and I have about 30-35,000 negatives I'd like to preserve in a format which could be easily viewed. The negatives are mostly 120mm, 35mm and 4x5's. I want to keep his work "alive", but need a medium to view it in (holding negatives up to light is no fun).

Any thoughts?

It's my understanding (because I haven't toyed w/ Lightroom much myself) that Lightroom has a batch archiving feature.

I believe Nikon makes a scanner for 35mm negatives as well as slides. B&H Photo has a number of Nikon as well as others.
