I heard the 18-55 kit lens isn't very good. I will be buying a d5200 and found kit lenses of either 18-105 or 18-140mm. Which is better? I will be doing alot of sports (hockey) photography and I'm a newby. Thanks

The 18-55 is as good as the others in that range. If you are going to buy a slow lens, I would go with the 18-140, but it also depends on the price premium. If the games are indoors, you might want to look at faster lenses. Spend some time and research before you waste your money on the wrong lens.

There are many options, no one lens is good at everything. It sounds like you need to cover "regular" shooting along with sports? If that is the case and that was my lens budget, I would get the 18-55 kit lens for general shooting and the Tamron 70-300 VC for a long zoom. Keep in mind that you will need to crank up the ISO for indoor sports. "fast" zooms for sports start at over $1200.

I bought the 18-140 as my kit lens. better zoom that than the 18-55. I was fortunate to experiment with a D3200 and 18-55 before I bought my D5200 and I did not like the 18-55. The 18-140 is heavier than the 18-55 though
