how to get frame rate to 9fps

Following the guidelines in the handbook to the letter, I tested my recently purchased second hand D3s ( 59000shutter count) for high speed capture.
On both FX and DX mode, I managed to get 5-6 fps, with VR turned off, auto ISO turned off.
I did have it on AF mode.
And I was using an Extreme Pro card.
The camera takes great pictures, so am I doing something wrong?

Shooting RAW or JPEG? That frame rate may only be achievable when shooting JPEG. I did a quick web search on D3 fps and everywhere they mentioned 9 fps they specifically mentioned in JPEG mode.

If you look under the specs on the Nikon site it states 5 fps in FX and 7 fps in DX.

Maybe he didn't notice it in his owners manual. Then again, maybe it didn't come with an owners manual.

I'm curious....what would be the purpose of shooting at 9FPS? Seems excessively fast to me. 5 or 7 isn't enough? 2 more is going to make a huge difference?
