Turning liveview off for video

I am not aware of any way to turn the screen off in Live View. You would have no monitor for video.
It is a DSLR. SLR means it has the 45 degree mirror behind the lens, which you can see with the lens removed. Press the shutter then, and you see the mirror come up. The mirror being down normally blocks the sensor, and instead directs the lens view up to the viewfinder. Focusing and light meter stuff is done by specialized stuff in the view finder. Normal photography, when the shutter button is pressed, after focusing and light meter stuff is done, then the mirror comes up allowing lens access to the shutter and sensor, for the picture. You can see the viewfinder go dark for an instant of the photograph (while mirror is up). Then the shutter closes and the mirror comes down, and the view finder works again. That is a SLR.
Live View is tremendously different. It has to raise the mirror and open the shutter, for the image to project onto the sensor. The rear LCD monitor shows the sensor image - which only works for regular pictures after the image is captured, but works in real time in Live View (the meaning of Live View). The viewfinder naturally goes dark with the mirror up for Live View or video. Several features no longer work in Live View. Focus becomes radically different, no longer the good phase shift method in the viewfinder, instead the actual Live View image pixels must be examined for maximum contrast difference (which is slow). Shutter operation (like 30 frames per second for video) is done in the sensor, enabling the capture. All the time in Live View, the mirror is up and the focal plane shutter is open. It is simply but extremely different.
