Problem with Flash Latch D3100

I've got a 2 yr old D3100, and since y'day my flash latch remains open, I cant get it closed.

The latch seems to be in tact.

Any thoughts on what could be the issue and where can I get it rectified.

I would assume you are taking about the built in flash? It it will not close then you may end up have to send it to Nikon to get it repaired.

Well I don't remember my D3100 that much but I would assume that it is not much different from my D5100 in the flip up flash. there is a little arm that is on the left side that has a hook on it. It is spring loaded so when you have the flash up as yours always is now you should be able to move it and it will spring back to the original position. Does your do that?

Yes the hook comes back to its position if I pull back...

And the hook is present. The only other part is the place for the hook to hold in the flash section on the pop-up flash. Can you see up in there to see if anything is broken? Also is the hook full or is the tip broken off? Did you child stick bubble gum up in the flash?
