But I have a newbie question. Wouldn't it have been better to zoom in on the quail more since the background is mostly out of focus except for the limb?

It could go either way, I suppose. Some people prefer the bokeh while others find it distracting. In this case, I've cropped it down significantly since I've only a 300mm lens and these quail are very skittish.

Here is the original image of the quail. I'm not sure I would want to crop it down anymore than I have, but it's worth a try, I suppose.

Oh, thank you for explaining it to me. :) I was wondering how you snuck up on a quail to get that shot. lol skittish is an understatement. lol :D
