Suggestions for 4th of July photography with kids

Not interested in shooting fireworks themselves. More interested in shooting children playing with fireworks at night. Would appreciate some suggestions regarding recommended settings. Shooting with a d5100, can alternate between a 50mm 1.5 prime lens, and a 17-55mm 5.6 lens, I will not have a tripod.

Would love to see some sample shots of your work for ideas. Wouldn't mind knowing your settings either.

Thanks in advance.

I handed my kids sparklers for our Canada Day long weekend and we had a blast seeing what we came up with for our first try at this. I used 35mm and a tripod for 10sec exposures. There are some other recent posts on here about this so have a look and read through posts I bet you'll find lots of helpful info :)
