SLR Shutter limit???

All the shutters are tested by nikon to see when they fail....thats how they get the rating say 100.000 but thats there test conditions and just like some cars go on for ever so do some shutters ...Recently Nikon have been lubricating the mechanism to make it last longer and hence we have had oil on the sensor ....dont worry about it some rated at 50,000 have done 100.000+
you can check your shutter count at

Check shutter count online - My Shutter Count.com

Which is of course what everyone wants to know when you sell it.

Wouldn't worry too much mate. Shutters are relatively cheap to replace. $300-$400 on a D700. $200-$300 on a D5100. Oh and if you do wear one out, you are obviously enjoying your hobby which is a great thing :)

I would imagine that, as with cars, a well cared for and maintained camera will tend to last longer than the Nikon quoted average, while one that sees more active duty (lots of days in the cold and heat, outdoors in dusty environments and weather) may tend to give up the ghost sooner. And as was said, if the camera is otherwise in good working order, $300 isn't a lot to spend to keep it going if you loved it enough to wear it out. The average user will likely be ready to move on to new technology by the time it does, so they get a choice - repair or upgrade.
