Here are some that I shot last weekend. Didn't shoot anything below 2500 ISO. Man I love this thing.

Just got a used d3 from a friend. I also have a d300 and 1600 iso is the max the camera can do. For Me and my taste of decent grain. How high do you shoot with the d3 that you think is the highest amount of noise you find acceptable? My friend 6400 is the max but im thinking it might be 1/2 stop less or so.

I am not a fan of grain. I shot the D300 at 2000 with no real issues but that was max. I shot with the D3 at 4-5K a lot and I would be willing to do large prints at that. I have shot some 6400, but that was last week and haven't had much time to look at them.

Kick ass stuff buddy! I guess the exposure makes a huge difference in the grain outcome. Im doing weddings now so will also add some sppedlights mounted on light stands for depth and added fill for the backgrounds on the dance floor. Was shooting 2000 with the d300 and 3200 with the d3 but the pics look so much better On the d3 even on the screen it just pops and on themonitor just looks so flat and dead. Thanks again

Hi Stangman98,

To me, the most annoying condition to master at stage photography is the "light man"!

At most places, someone is in charge of the light and the disaster is preprogrammed.
Too many show where they throw coloured beams on the artists… the whole performance
long. That brings nightmarish WB corrections!

In the posted pictures, however, I notice a white guitar and black clothes; these are perfect
colour picker sampling areas to achieve WB. Did you try?

Have a good day…

so you mean there could be "grey cards" everywhere?

For sure! The first thing I do when I shoot in critical situations is to look for
"grey cards". May it be a guitar, a chair or something in the decor… name it!

Have a good time!

You work is good.

I own 2 D3 and love them. I do not have any problems to shoot them ISO6400. There is always the same condition: to properly expose the image, preferably "over" rather the "under". Noise is acceptable with the D3 at ISO 6400.
Of course a D3 is not a D3s/D4 in terms of the ISO performance...

While shooting concert the best metering probably is "spot".

With D300 I shoot to 3200, no worries about the noise.
I could provide some examples in case of need.
