Sigma DG 70-300 zoom and auto focus

I got a new 3100 along with a Sigma zoom. The auto fucus does not work at all with the zoom. am I doing something wrong or it this normal and will I have to just get used to manual focus with this lens. My eyes arent what they used to be and I cant seem to get very crisp pics like this.
I should add that it does try to focus automatically but will never settle on a focus. It just goes from one end of focus to the other and never settles on proper focus.

Hi...If your Sigma lens doesn't have the letters HSM "Hyper Sonic Motor" on it it will not Auto Focus on your D3100...

Take it back and get a lens that does AF...Nikon AF-S...Sigma HSM...

My lens does not have HSM on it anywhere but it does have a auto focus or manual switch. I should add that it does try to focus automatically but will never settle on a focus. It just goes from one end of focus to the other and never settles on proper focus.
