Left Focus Issues

I really love my D800e, but it has the dreaded left focus problem.
After googling the issue I see it is widespread, and I have also seen that some of the users that returned the cameras to Nikon, had a worse problem when the camera was returned?
Is this true?
It sounds like to adjust the left focus sensor, it puts out the center sensor?

I am a bit cautious as to sending my camera back, if it makes the problem worse.

Is it a mechanincal problem or something that can be fixed with firmware?

I think Nikon repair does a great job of addressing this fix. I had the LF issue too and Nikon fixed it up very nicely. And the fix requires an entire readjustment on the focus system. So unless it's really cutting into your shooting ability, I'd wait until your sensor is good and dirty before you send it in since they'll also clean your "sensor", too.
