Union Canal Tunnel

This is the Union Canal Tunnel the oldest transportation tunnel in the US completed June 1827, It took two years to dig the 729 feet with hand tools and black powder.

I'm assuming it was part of the canal system?

Another canal tunnel is at Paw Paw, WV on the former C&O Canal. It's just over 3,000 FT long and was completed in 1848. It's in a remote setting. You can safely hike its length on the towpath, but bring a flashlight!
