D7100 kit lense

I am fairly new to photography, I am going to get a D7100, would I be wise to get the kit lens with it, it is $400.00 extra. If not please givve advice on which would be a good everyday/ walk around lens. I have a Sigma 70-200 2.8, and a Nikon 40mm. Macro. Also have a 55-300. So I guess I would like direction on what is a good, all around (if such a thing exists) lens.

Just my thoughts (for what little they're worth) Adding the 18-105 "kit" lens adds $400 to the overall price. That specific lens normally retails for $400 so you're not really saving anything.

You already have a 70-200, a 55-300 and a 40 macro. I will assume they are all Nikon Mount. The 18-105 is a darn good lens it only gains you the low ends. I think I'd save the 400 and save up enough to get something in the 10-24 range or maybe the 16-35

If you read Hogan its not up to the job so as you have some good lenses already give it a miss .

Perasonally I am a one lens man ...18-200 or 300 if I need another lens I have a body to go with it ...

$400 will buy you a Tamron 17-50 2.8. Leaves the kit lens for dead. Would compliment your existing lenses well.

for gods sake not Tamron .. I dont understand why you want this bag full of lenses...carry it ...dirt in the camera etc etc ..

Just get one lens unless you have a specialist function for which you need a aspecific lens

As I said in original post, I am fairly new to this all, and do not have the money to buy a new body for every lens I may need. I understand we all have different needs, I am not a pro, but would like to get some great pictures, and who knows, I might actually make some money someday doing this. That is why I asked the question, what lens would replace the "kit" lens and give me good IQ and not leave me in debt for the sake of nicer than "kit lens" pictures.

My simple answer, and that means forgetting about what lenses you already have, is the 18-105 is kind of a jack-of-all-trades, master-at-none sort of lens. I love mine and it's what I shoot with probably at *least* 80% of the time.

You have some overlap going on with the 55-300 and the 70-200 so if it were me I'd probably dump one of them, most likely the 70-200, and put the money into something else. But that's me and my shooting and I'd rather ask myself, "How do I get this shot with the lens I have?" Rather than, "What lens do I need to get this shot?"

But again, that's me and my "light and fast" approach.

I would skip the kit lens and go for a Nikon 16-85VR or the very nice Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 OS Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon 884306 B&H

Your only true guide is DXO and you will discover that a zoom means thant anything over 6MP is wasted and with a prime over 10mp is wasted ..think I stick with me D7000 and the 18-200 Sigma Zoom !!!! Profit it king

Very good advice Horoscope Fish The 185-105 is a good range for a walk about lens. That is the next one on my list. Then get rid on the 18-55 I have now.

I'm about to but the D7100, but I am not decided which lens to buy. I can either go with the kit 18-105VR lens - or for just a tad more I can get the Sigma 18-250mm OS for just a fraction more. I don't have any other lenses at the moment, and want an all-round travel lens. (Will eventually add more later). Is that Sigma lens decent or should I opt for the standard kit lens and save up for the Tamron 70-300mm VC instead for telezoom?
